Claude searches the web through Brave Search. Analysis found Claude's cited results overlap Brave's top non-sponsored organic results 86.7% of the time — 13 of the top 15, with a p-value below 0.0001. Independently, developer Simon Willison inspected Claude's search tool definition shortly after launch and found an internal parameter named BraveSearchParams.
Claude does not crawl the live web itself to answer you. It reads what Brave has indexed. If Brave hasn't indexed you, Claude cannot cite you.
This surprises nearly everyone, including people who do this for a living — and it means your Google and Bing work does not transfer here.
Step one: check whether Brave can see you
Go to search.brave.com and search site:yourdomain.com.
If nothing comes back, that's your entire problem, and no amount of content work will fix it until it's solved. Brave operates an independent index — it isn't a rebadged Google or Bing.
To improve your standing there:
- Make sure the site is cleanly crawlable — valid sitemap, no accidental
noindex, fast responses - Earn links from sites Brave already indexes well
- Keep your entity details consistent, since Brave leans on the same real-world trust signals everyone else does
Let the right Anthropic crawler in
Anthropic runs three separate crawlers, and the distinction matters enormously:
ClaudeBot— collects training dataClaude-SearchBot— builds the search index Claude cites fromClaude-User— fetches a page when a user asks Claude to visit it
Blocking ClaudeBot does not remove you from Claude's citations. Blocking Claude-SearchBot does.
The timing trap: Anthropic added Claude-SearchBot to its documentation in February 2026. Any robots.txt written before then predates the distinction — which means a broad rule written to opt out of AI training may now be silently blocking retrieval too.
If you want out of training but still citable, allow Claude-SearchBot and Claude-User, and disallow ClaudeBot. See which AI crawlers to allow.
What Claude tends to cite
Once you're in Brave's index, the qualities that earn a citation are consistent with the other engines, with a noticeable lean toward substance:
- Direct answers with real specifics — numbers, ranges, timelines, locations
- Balanced content — pages that state limits, caveats, and when something isn't the right choice tend to be preferred over pure sales copy
- Clear structure — headings phrased as real questions, self-contained sections
- Evident expertise — depth that reads like it came from someone who does the work
If your content is honest about tradeoffs, you're already writing in the register this engine rewards.
Don't skip it because it's smaller
Claude has a smaller user base than ChatGPT, and it's tempting to deprioritize. Two reasons not to:
Its users skew heavily toward professionals, developers, and business decision-makers — people researching purchases on behalf of organizations. And because most competitors have never even checked their Brave indexing, the field is unusually empty.
It's a smaller room, but there's almost nobody else in it.
Not sure if Brave has you indexed? It's one of the first things we check. Book a strategy call and we'll audit your visibility across Google, Bing, and Brave — the first four calls from the site are free.
