Search & Visibility

SEO, AEO, and GEO — getting found and getting cited.

Which AI crawlers should I allow in robots.txt?

Allow the retrieval crawlers — OAI-SearchBot, Claude-SearchBot, PerplexityBot, and Googlebot — because blocking any of them makes you uncitable in that engine. Blocking the training crawlers (GPTBot, ClaudeBot, Google-Extended) is a separate, optional choice that does not affect citations.

How do I get my business cited by ChatGPT?

ChatGPT answers from Bing's index, not Google's — its citations align with Bing's top results about 87% of the time. So get into Bing Webmaster Tools, make sure your robots.txt allows OAI-SearchBot, and put the actual answer in the first 200–500 words of the page.

How do I get my business cited by Gemini?

Gemini and AI Overviews read Google's index — 76% of AI Overview citations come from pages already ranking in Google's top 10. So ranking is the entry ticket, and the AEO work sits on top of it. There is no shortcut around traditional SEO for this engine.

How do I get my business recommended by Perplexity?

Perplexity runs its own index and cites differently from everyone else — about 80% of what it cites is not in Google's top results, and it hands out 20+ citation slots per answer. It weights freshness and granular specifics heavily, which makes it the most winnable engine for a small business.

How do I get my business recommended by Claude?

Claude searches the web through Brave Search — its citations overlap Brave's top organic results about 86.7% of the time. So getting into Brave's independent index is the requirement, and your Google or Bing rankings do not carry over.
